Frequently Asked Questions
Why us? Why Catalina?
Because Catalina cares for the community, the world, and each other. We are a thriving, spiritual community at the heart of Tucson, with a deep history of engaging the world for good. As part of our family you will be included in the many wonderful things we are doing to bring love and support to those in need. You will be a part of changing our world into a place where truth, beauty, and goodness are deeply rooted.
Why is Jesus still relevant?
Jesus’ message was centered on love. Jesus reminded us that all of our “rules” can be reduced to this: Love God, and your neighbors as yourself. Jesus was radical in loving others. He embraced sinners and outcasts, healed the sick, provided for the hungry, and called us to provide shelter for the homeless. These conditions are still relevant today. We reach out with the message of love to ease the suffering of others, and to embody God’s love in our own lives and the lives of our neighbors.
What should I expect?
You can expect to be welcomed at Catalina. You will be greeted at the door, and a bulletin will give you the order of the service. The people are friendly and if you have questions, they will be answered with kindness. Our congregation’s welcome statement is: Wherever you are in your spiritual journey whatever your age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation economic status, education, physical or mental ability, family structure, or religious background, you are welcome here. We welcome you as a person created by God with innate value.
We love music, children, and people from all different parts of life. Together, we come to worship God, to remember that God’s world is ours to care for, and to live out love and compassion, to encourage and be encouraged.
Why does God let bad things happen?
This is a common question, and we don’t have an answer that is easily understood. What we do know is that God is saddened when we suffer, and that in our darkest moments, God promises to be present with us so we are not alone. So, when we see someone going through a difficult time, we say something obvious like, God be near… because we don’t know that answer to why bad things happen, but we know that God will be very close during those times.
What happens after death?
We believe that life is eternal, and after death on this earth, our souls are somehow connected to God in a place we describe as “heaven.” Jesus reminded his followers that he was going to prepare a place for them. So, when we lose someone close to us, we have the hope that we will meet them someday in heaven.
What is the purpose of life?
Our purpose is to love God, to love God’s people (all the world), and to love ourselves. We do this through our everyday activities of interaction with the world and people, remembering that all that we do influences our present and our future. Our actions and words matter in the grand scheme of things. And so with every breath we take, we use our gifts and skills to bring honor to God and God’s world.
